What we found

What we found on 2,061 Sri Lankan business websites

In October 2026 we ran this same check on the websites listed in four Sri Lankan business directories. Few of the problems were technical. Most were small things that decide whether a customer gets in touch or tries the next business.

39%

of listed business websites didn't work at all

The address had expired, or the site was down, broken, parked or showing gambling pages. Directories still sent customers there.

810 of 2,061 sites

42%

make it hard to get in touch from a phone

No way to message or call in one tap, on the homepage or the Contact page. Most visitors here are on a phone.

509 of 1,211 working sites

79%

take more than 4 seconds to appear on a phone

On Google's own phone test. The typical site took 7.9 seconds to show its main content. Google's target is 2.5.

153 of 194 sites tested

53%

don't make it clear to Google which town they serve

Local searches here often name a place, like "dental clinic kandy".

655 of 1,237 working sites

62%

don't give Google their business details

Google has to guess their name, address and phone, and may get them wrong.

778 of 1,246 working sites

41%

were hand-built by a developer, with no editor for the owner

So every change to a price, a phone number or opening hours means going back to the developer.

Why a Sri Lankan check

Built around how Sri Lankans search and get in touch

Google handles 93.7% of searches in Sri Lanka, but most tools that check websites for Google were built for American and European sites. They compare you with the wrong businesses and miss what matters to customers here. Ours starts from how Sri Lankans search and get in touch.

Compared with Sri Lankan websites

Your report compares you with 1,246 working Sri Lankan business websites, not global averages.

Searches name a town

People here search by place: "cake shop colombo" gets about 1,300 searches a month. We check that Google knows where you are.

Phones first

8 in 10 devices used to go online in Sri Lanka are smartphones, so we check your site the way customers see it: on a phone.

English, Singlish and Tamil

Sri Lankans search Google in all three, and many customers read Sinhala or Tamil more easily than English. Global tools know nothing about any of them.

Tested on Sri Lankan sites

We checked our results against what a real phone browser shows, on 50 random Sri Lankan business websites. 906 of 918 matched.

Problems global tools miss

1 in 5 web addresses listed in Sri Lankan directories had expired, and 17 now show gambling or scam pages. If yours has, your report says so before anything else.

How we compare

How our report differs from a global SEO report

The same website, checked two ways. A typical global report lists technical warnings. Ours starts with what's costing you enquiries, says it in plain English, and tells you how long each fix takes.

A typical global SEO reportExample

  • Warning Meta description length: 166 characters
  • Warning 14 images missing alt attributes
  • Error Eliminate render-blocking resources
  • Warning Low text-to-HTML ratio: 8%
  • Notice 3 referring domains
  • + 112 more issues

Your LankaRank reportExample

  • Customers on phones can't reach you in one tap. High impact · about 15 min, free fix included
  • Slow on phones: your page takes 9.8 s to appear. Google's target is 2.5 s.
  • Google can't tell you're in Kandy, so you're less likely to show up for "dentist Kandy".
  • Not linked to Google Maps. Customers can't get directions from your site.
  • Compared with 1,246 Sri Lankan business websites we checked

Why generic audits miss the real problems

Most SEO audits count technical warnings written for large international websites. LankaRankBot, the checker behind your report, was built and tested on Sri Lankan business websites, so it starts with what matters to customers here.

  • It starts with how customers reach you.Whether someone on a phone can call or message you in one tap, and find you on a map: the things that decide whether they contact you or the next business.
  • It notices when your address has expired or been taken over.Expired, parked and taken-over addresses get their own warning. Of the 2,061 directory websites we checked, it flags all 17 that now show gambling or scam pages.
  • It fits the way your site is built.WordPress, a website builder or a site coded by a developer: your report says how each fix gets made on yours.

What you'd pay elsewhere

Don't pay agency prices for the basics

What holds most small businesses back online is basic: no WhatsApp button, a slow page, an address Google can't read. You shouldn't need a Rs 39,000-a-month retainer to find and fix that.

Questions

Questions about the free SEO check

Can I get a free audit of my website?

Yes. Type your website address at the top of this page and you get a full report in about a minute, plus your most important fix explained step by step. To open the fix, you leave an email address and a contact number, which we never share. There's no payment, no account and no sales call.

What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit checks how easily Google can find and understand your website, and what visitors run into once they arrive. Ours covers four areas: whether customers can get in touch, how you show up on Google, technical health such as speed on phones, and trust. It reads only what any visitor can see.

How much does an SEO audit cost in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lankan agencies usually offer a free audit after a contact form or a call, and charge about Rs 45,000 for a full one. Ours is free and takes about a minute.

How is this different from an agency's free SEO audit?

An agency's free audit usually takes 3–5 working days and leads to a monthly package, typically Rs 20,000–60,000 a month. Ours arrives in about a minute, with no call, and explains your most important fix for free.

Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?

Not on its own. ChatGPT and other AI chatbots can explain SEO and comment on text you paste in, but they don't measure your site. They can't run Google's phone speed test, check the same things the same way every time, or compare you with other Sri Lankan businesses. Our check does all three, and each result says where its numbers come from.

Why not use a global SEO tool?

Global SEO tools are good at technical checks for large websites, but they're built for American and European markets. They don't know how Sri Lankans search or get in touch, can't compare you with other Sri Lankan businesses, and most cost US$29–129 a month. Ours compares you with 1,246 Sri Lankan business websites.

Can you get me to #1 on Google?

No one can promise that, and Google's own guidance says so. Be wary of anyone who does. What we can do is find and fix the things that stop Google, and customers, from understanding your business and getting in touch.

Do you need my website password?

No. We only look at what any visitor can see, and nothing on your website changes.

I don't have a website. Can I still use it?

Yes. Choose "No website yet", enter your business name and town, and we check your Google Business Profile instead: whether you've claimed it, and whether your hours, phone number, photos and reviews are in good shape.

Does it work with WordPress, Wix, Shopify or a custom-coded website?

Yes. We recognise WordPress, 16 website builders, 13 other content systems and custom-coded sites. On WordPress, Wix, Shopify, Webflow, GoDaddy, Squarespace, Blogger, Weebly, Joomla and Drupal, your fixes come as steps for your own editor. For a custom-coded site, we write the exact changes for your developer, ready to send on WhatsApp.

Where do the results and comparisons come from?

Your report comes from Google's PageSpeed Insights test, from reading your public homepage and Contact page, and for business profiles, from your public Google Maps listing. The comparisons come from our check of 2,061 websites listed in four Sri Lankan business directories in October 2026, 1,246 of which were working. We also tested our checker against a real Chrome browser on 50 random Sri Lankan business websites: 906 of its 918 results matched.
