Which .lk should a small business choose?
For most small businesses, either a name.com.lk at Rs 1,000 a year or a name.lk at Rs 5,000.
name.com.lk (Budget) is the cheapest address you can own outright, and it works just as well on Google. It's longer to type and say.
name.lk (Economy) is shorter and easier to remember, for five times the price.
Standard adds every second-level version of your name, so no one else can register them. Few small businesses need it.
.lk or .com: which is better for a Sri Lankan business?
If your customers are in Sri Lanka, .lk (or .com.lk) says so. Google says country domains like .lk give "a strong signal to both users and search engines" that a site is meant for that country (Google Search Central).
A .com suits a business that sells abroad, and many web designers include one free for the first year. Either way, ask what it costs to renew, and make sure it's registered in your name. Which ending you pick matters less than whether customers can find your website and contact you from it.
How do I get a .lk domain?
Register it with the LK Domain Registry, or through a company that resells .lk names. Expect two to four working days.
What you need: the owner's name, email address, phone number and NIC, passport or driving licence number. A registered business can add its name and registration number.
How long it takes: the registry says approval generally takes one working day. You then have three working days to pay, and the domain is active within a day.
How to pay: by card online, eZ Cash, cheque, or cash at the registry's office in Dehiwala. The registry doesn't take direct bank deposits.
Schools, religious places, banks, insurers and a few other kinds of organisation need a supporting letter. Most businesses don't.
Whose name should the domain be in?
Yours, or your business's, never your web designer's. The registry's policy says the registrant should be the person or organisation actually using the domain, and it doesn't transfer a domain to another registrant without a valid reason (registration policy).
If someone else registers it for you, check that you're named as the registrant and that renewal reminders reach you. Many website problems start with a domain nobody renewed.
What happens when a .lk domain expires?
Eventually your website and email stop working, and someone else may take the name. The registry emails reminders to the billing contact before the expiry date. After a grace period, the domain is suspended and shows a "temporarily disconnected" page; others can queue for the name, and it may be moved to a more expensive category. Getting it back means paying everything owed (renewing a domain).
It happens a lot. When we checked 2,061 websites listed in Sri Lankan business directories, 403 (20%) no longer existed because the domain had expired, 61 were parked or up for sale, and 17 had been bought by someone else and showed gambling or scam pages under the business's old name. Google's free business.site addresses fared worst: 53 of 65 were gone.
LankaRankBot checks for this on every free audit: an expired, parked or taken-over address gets its own warning. Check your website free.
More questions about .lk domains
What is a .lk domain?
Sri Lanka's country-code domain: the ending on addresses such as yourbusiness.lk or yourbusiness.com.lk. It's run by the LK Domain Registry, and like any country ending, it tells customers and Google that the business is in Sri Lanka.
How much do a domain and hosting cost in Sri Lanka?
A .lk domain costs Rs 1,000–8,000 a year at the registry's prices, and shared hosting for a small business website about Rs 4,000–20,000 a year. Many web designers include both for the first year only, so ask what they cost from the second. Checked 13 October 2026.
Can I get a .lk domain for free?
No. The cheapest is Rs 1,000 a year. A "free domain" offer usually means an address under someone else's name (such as yourbusiness.theirsite.lk), or a domain that's free for the first year only.
How long does it take to register a .lk domain?
Two to four working days in all. The registry says approval generally takes one working day, you then have three working days to pay, and the domain becomes active within a day of payment.
Can I move a .lk domain to another owner later?
Not easily. The registry doesn't transfer a domain to another registrant without a valid reason, which is why it should be registered in your own name, or your business's, from the start.
