What is a Google Business Profile?

It's the free listing that shows your business on Google Maps and in Google Search: your name, location, phone number, opening hours, photos and reviews. It was called Google My Business until 2021, so you'll see both names.

For most Sri Lankan businesses it matters more than a website. Only 5% of Rainbow Pages listings and 12% of lankayp.com listings gave a website of their own, so for everyone else the profile is the shop window customers see first.

Why isn't my business showing on Google Maps?

Usually for one of these seven reasons. Google ranks local results on how well a profile matches the search, how far the business is from the person searching, and how well known it is (Google Business Profile Help).

  • There's no profile yetGoogle can only show a business it knows about, and a business with no profile has nothing to show.
  • It isn't verifiedGoogle says verified businesses are more likely to show up in search results.
  • The details are missing or out of dateGoogle says profiles with complete and accurate details are more likely to show up for local searches.
  • The category doesn't match what people searchGoogle matches each profile to searches by what it says the business does. A dental clinic listed only as "Medical centre" can miss "dentist" searches.
  • The customer is too far awayGoogle Maps shows nearby businesses first. Someone searching in Colombo won't usually see a shop in Kandy.
  • Businesses nearby have more reviewsGoogle counts how well known a business is, including how many reviews it has.
  • It's marked closedA profile marked temporarily or permanently closed tells customers not to come.

The free check shows which of these apply to your profile.

What does a claimed or verified profile mean?

A claimed profile is one the owner has taken control of by proving to Google that they run the business. Google calls that proof verification. Until it's done, the owner can't change the details, add photos, reply to reviews or see how many people called.

Many profiles are created without the owner: by Google from public information, or by customers adding a place they know. In our lookup of 330 Rainbow Pages businesses with no website, 124 had a profile we could confidently match, and about half of those (63 of 124; 95% range 42–59%) hadn't been claimed.

How do Sri Lankan Google profiles compare?

Many are missing the basics. We looked at 2,103 businesses with no website of their own, taken from the first page of 150 Google Maps searches by business type and town across all nine provinces. 61% had fewer than 10 photos and 64% had fewer than 10 reviews. The typical business had 4.

The first sample comes from Google's own search results, so it favours better-known businesses: the real picture is likely worse. Claimed status isn't in Google's public data, so it comes from a separate, smaller lookup. How we did it.

What does the free check look at?

11 checks in three areas that customers and Google notice. You get a health score out of 100, how you compare with other Sri Lankan businesses, and your most important fix first.

Most SEO audits look only at websites, so a business that lives on Google Maps gets nothing from them. This check starts from your public listing, as a customer sees it.

How do I add or claim my business on Google Maps?

Through a free Google Business Profile. Google publishes its own steps for adding a business or claiming one that's already there: Add or claim your Business Profile (Google Business Profile Help, opens in a new tab). Your free report tells you whether your profile needs this. The Growth Plan then takes you through it step by step, along with everything else on your report.

Questions about Google Business Profiles

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Google doesn't charge to create a profile or keep one. Be wary of anyone who asks for money just to "register" your business on Google Maps.

Is Google Business Profile the same as Google My Business?

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021. Many people in Sri Lanka still search for the old name.

Do Google reviews help my business show up?

They can. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help a business's local ranking, and reviews are what customers read first when they compare. In our sample of 2,103 Sri Lankan businesses with no website, the typical one had 4 reviews, and 64% had fewer than 10.

Do I need a website if I have a Google profile?

Not to show up on Google Maps. But a profile with no website link loses the "Website" button, and a website gives Google more to go on. Only 5% of Rainbow Pages listings had a website of their own, so most businesses rely on the profile alone. If you'd like a simple website, we build one for Rs 14,900 one-off.

Why couldn't you find my business?

Usually because the name is spelled differently on Google, or the town is different (for example "Nugegoda" rather than "Colombo"). Try the name exactly as it appears on Google Maps. If we still can't find it, your business may not have a profile yet.

Do you change anything on my profile?

No. We only read your public listing, the way any customer would. We never ask you to sign in to Google, and nothing on your profile changes.

Where does the information come from?

Your report comes from your public Google Maps listing, which we look up through a data provider (named in our privacy policy). The comparisons come from our own study of Sri Lankan businesses in October 2026.
