How fast should a website load on a phone?
The main content should appear within 2.5 seconds. Google calls this Largest Contentful Paint: the moment the biggest picture or block of text on the screen has loaded. It rates 2.5 seconds or less as good, and over 4 seconds as poor (web.dev, Largest Contentful Paint).
The test shows a second time too: when the first thing appears on screen. A page can start showing something quickly and still keep a customer waiting for the part they came for, which is why the main-content time is the one to watch.
Why does website speed matter for a small business?
Because your customers are on phones, and Google recommends fast pages. 80.6% of devices people in Sri Lanka use to go online are smartphones (Department of Census and Statistics, Computer Literacy Statistics 2025).
Google advises site owners to "achieve good Core Web Vitals for success with Search", and the main-content time is one of those Core Web Vitals. Google says they align with "what our core ranking systems seek to reward" (Google Search Central). Speed won't lift a page above others that answer the search better, but a slow page gives customers a reason to go back and tap the next business.
How fast are Sri Lankan business websites?
Most are slow on phones. We ran Google's phone test on a random 194 working Sri Lankan business websites listed in business directories. The typical site took 7.9 seconds for its main content to appear, more than three times Google's target, and 153 of 194 took over 4 seconds.
| Finding | Share | Sites | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main content took over 4 seconds | 79% | 153 of 194 | 73–84% |
| Speed score below 50 (poor) | 31% | 60 of 194 | 25–38% |
| Speed score 90 or more (good) | 10% | 19 of 194 | 6–15% |
| Enough real Chrome visitors for Google to report on | 31% | 61 of 194 | 25–38% |
Each site was tested once from Google's servers; scores move by about 5 to 10 points from run to run. How we did it.
What makes a website slow on a phone?
Usually one or more of these five things. Each adds to what a phone has to download and process before your page is ready.
- Large photosPhotos straight from a phone or camera can be several megabytes each. On a phone connection, they're often what customers wait for.
- Too many add-onsChat widgets, sliders, pop-ups, social feeds and tracking scripts each add more for the phone to download and run before the page settles.
- Slow hostingIf the server takes a long time to answer, every page starts late, however light it is.
- Heavy themes and page buildersSome ready-made designs load code for features the site never uses.
- Fonts and code that load firstSome files have to arrive before the browser can show anything at all, so the screen stays blank for longer.

Questions about website speed
Is this the same as Google PageSpeed Insights?
It uses the same test: Google's PageSpeed Insights, on its phone setting. We show the result in plain words, next to Google's target and to Sri Lankan business websites, so you can see whether yours needs attention.
Why is my website fast on my computer but slow on a phone?
A phone has less processing power than a computer, and a mobile connection can be slower and less steady than office broadband or Wi-Fi. Google's test copies a mid-range phone on a slower connection, so a page that feels instant at your desk can take several seconds on a customer's phone.
Why do I get a different result each time?
Each test is a single page load from Google's servers, so results move a little from run to run: in our study, the score could change by 5 to 10 points. Google runs the test from its own data centres, not from Sri Lanka. Look at whether your page is within the target, rather than at one exact number.
What is a good speed score?
Google scores 90 to 100 as good, 50 to 89 as needing improvement and below 50 as poor. Only 19 of the 194 Sri Lankan business websites we tested scored 90 or more; the typical one scored 61.
Is the speed test free? Do you keep my results?
Yes, it's free. We send the address you type to Google to run the test, show you the result, and don't keep it. To stop misuse, we count how many tests each visitor runs in an hour.
